The North-South Line (red, code NS) is Singapore's first MRT line, running from Jurong East in the west, up through Woodlands in the north, then south through Orchard and the city to Marina South Pier. It links the northern towns to the Central Business District and connects to every other MRT line.
Because it threads through Orchard, City Hall, Raffles Place and Marina Bay, the North-South Line carries some of the network's heaviest commuter traffic. Its interchanges at Jurong East, Bishan, Dhoby Ghaut and the city centre make it the backbone for trips between the north and downtown.
